Michelle Rios Actriz
Michelle Rios has performed throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe in countless theatrical, operatic, and concert venues. Some of her many credits include featured roles in the Tony Award nominated Broadway productions of Paul Simon’s "The Capeman," "The Sound of Music," and "Man of La Mancha." She appeared as ‘Abuela Claudia’ in "In the Heights," and originated the role of ‘Maria Elena’ in Elizabeth Swados’ opera "Missionaries" at La MaMa, E.T.C. and at New York Stage and Film. As a guest artist of both the Spoleto Music Festivals in Spoleto, Italy and Charleston, S.C., she performed the World Premiere of "Magic and Transformation," a chamber orchestral piece with lyrics by the late singer/songwriter Lou Reed and music by the award winning American composer Peter Gordon.
Other guest artist appearances include: The Washington Opera, The National Symphony, The Greenville Symphony, The Arlington Symphony, The Pan American Symphony Orchestra, The Core Ensemble, Opera Maxlrain (Germany), and the "In" Series in Washington, DC. Regional venues include: The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center Theatre, The Public Theatre, The Signature Theatre, The Alliance Theatre Company, The Weston Playhouse, Geva Theatre Center, Berkshire Theatre Festival and others.
A Metropolitan Opera Mid-Atlantic Regional Semi-finalist, she has collaborated with artists and composers on various theatrical and musical works. Because of her unique vocal range and versatility, she has performed with luminaries in the popular music world such as Grammy Award winners Paul Simon, Marc Anthony, Ruben Blades, Lila Downs, Ednita Nazario, and has shared the operatic stage with renowned tenor Placido Domingo. She has also acted alongside Oscar nominees such as Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastroantonio, and Mare Winningham, just to name a few. At the request of Tony Award winning composer Adam Guettel, she had the pleasure of performing the role of ‘Signora Naccarelli’ in the newly revised chamber version of "The Light in the Piazza" which first premiered in Vermont at the Weston Playhouse. Ms. Rios originated the role of ‘Lupe’ in the World Premiere of Michael John LaChiusa and Sybille Pearson’s "Giant "directed by Jonathan Butterell. She also originated the role of ‘Mama Elena’ in the workshop presentation of the adapted musical version of "Like Water for Chocolate" with music by Grammy award winner Lila Downs and a book by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Quiara Alegria Hudes. Conceived at the Sundance Theatre Lab, "Like Water for Chocolate" was directed by both Jonathan Butterell and the Tony Award winning musical director Ted Sperling. Ms. Rios plays the role of ‘Flora’ in the upcoming feature film "Frontera" starring Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, Michael Pena, and Eva Longoria. Born in Puerto Rico, Ms. Rios currently resides in Canada.
