Carolina Slim – Natalia Arroyo – Block Heater 2020

January 19 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm MST

El Sistema Multicultural Orchestra

Explore “The New Mexican Music” with Carolina Slim and Natalia! In this new project, check out two powerful women musicians that bring different styles, rhythms, and sounds from their hometowns in Mexico, in an amazing combination of guitar, violin, and voices. Both singer songwriters have been performing together throughout 2019 in venues like Mexifest, Marda Gras Festival, C-Square, Spruce Meadows Fest, Dia de Muertos, and Catrina Festival.

Carolina Slim is a singer songwriter from Mexico. Her music is pop, jazzy, and folk. She loves to write her songs in Spanish and English because it’s important for her that everybody understand that we are all brothers, no matter where we come from or what language we speak. Carolina is recognized by singing with her soul and is a woman that loves her roots. She recorded her first album as a leader called Mariposa Tricolor (she was the pianist, producer, and did the arrangements). She has played all across the city, from Fiestaval to Femme Wave, Calgary Folk Festival to the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

Natalia Arroyo is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and composer born in the Mexican border, amid the social transition between two cultures. Dedicating her life to spreading the contemporary traditional music of northern Mexico worldwide, Natalia has performed in important stages and festivals around the world, from the Smithsonian Folk Festival in Washington, D.C., to the Autumn Festival in Paris, France, to the Rainforest World Music Festival in Malaysia. She has been a member of musical group recognized worldwide like Son de Madera, Tierra Mestiza Ensemble, Rodolfo Mederos Orchestra, and has been a session violinist for many more.

Calgary Folk Music Festival’s 5th annual Block Heater, is presented by ATB, happening in the heart of Calgary’s Inglewood and East Village. Over thirty artists — from the homegrown to the far-flung — perform in concerts and collaborative sessions at five uniquely Calgary venues: the Central Library, Festival Hall, Gorilla Whale, Ironwood, King Eddy, and Studio Bell.
